Transferring Your DNA Data from Ancestry to Other Sites

There are three sites where you can transfer your data from Ancestry for free: FamilyTreeDNA, MyHeritage and GEDmatch. You just might find a close match at one of these other sites that is not on Ancestry. Here are the instructions to move your data:

Download your data from Ancestry. Here is Ancestry’s help page for that:

Upload your data. At each of the sites you will need to create an account. It takes some time for them to process your data, usually a few days.

FamilyTreeDNA charges $25 to unlock the family trees of your matches. I recommend that you do that only after we confirm that there are useful close matches.
